ACDA Update 8 (February 2011)
Kia ora and welcome to 2011!
And what a year it is shaping up to be already! Please feel free to let us know about your regional community development events and activities. We are happy to forward those that are relevant at a regional level to the ACDA mail list.
December 2010 Regional Communities Summit Report and Update
Following up the summit on the 14th of December, which was co-hosted by Auckland Council and ACDA, is a full report. A shorter summary is in development and will include some ‘next steps’.
Auckland Community Development Charter
The Auckland Community Development Charter communicates a vision, a set of values and guiding principles that outline the way in which community development is understood, facilitated and undertaken within Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. The Charter is regarded as a working document that will be refined as we progress. If you support the charter please sign it and use it in your work. Please also add your comments. Your comments will help in the refinement of the charter in 2011.
ACDA Membership
ACDA is largely run on the volunteer energy of the Establishment Group. In December 2009, we launched a major Foundation Membership Appeal. This was designed to demonstrate the community mandate for ACDA, help us to work towards financial sustainability, and frankly, carry out the huge amount of work asked of us. Continuing on a voluntary basis is not going to work.
We are of course seeking other funding, but now we need you to show your support for us. We have over 40 members signed up so far, so let’s kick off the new year with a big boost to that excellent start!
You and your networks can join ACDA simply, by completing the membership form. You can join as an individual, or a community sector organisation.
Involvement with ACDA
In addition to becoming a member, we are always happy to hear from you if you would like to become more involved and we will be seeking your input on various things too. We need writers, strategists, networkers, publicists, organisers…. Let’s hear from you if you’re keen to take your support further.

Community Internship with ACDA
ACDA is considering applying for a grant to cover the salary of an Intern working with us. The main requirements are: a person currently in paid employment who wants to work with ACDA for the second half of this year, whose employing organisation would release them and would benefit from the secondment as well. If you or someone you know are interested, we would love to hear from you before February 18. Further information about the scheme is here.
If you have questions or want to discuss the possibility, please contact:
Christine Herzog, coordinator@awea.org.nz.
Treaty Application in Community Groups
The Treaty Resource Centre will be repeating its programme of courses and other activities supporting groups wanting to initiate or extend application of the Treaty of Waitangi in their own organisations. If you would like to be put on the mailing list for notices of this and other Treaty-related events, please send an email to:
admin@awea.org.nz.
Community Economic Development Conference, 19-20 April 2011

The theme of the conference is Making it happen: from possibility to profitability and will feature a host of leading practitioners from New Zealand and overseas.

Raise the Bar Public Meeting for Whanau and Community, 9th February, 2011
Raise The Bar Trust is a newly formed not for profit organisation. It operates as a catalyst to assist families and communities to address issues around excessive alcohol consumption, excessive numbers of outlets,
cheap prices, insufficient enforcement and to remedy a lack of leadership on these issues in all sectors and age groups.
Raise The Bar would welcome support from experienced facilitators to assist with a group exercise with people from local communities following the main presentation at our first public meeting of the year, at UNITEC 9th February 7 -9pm. See flyer and registration forms attached. As well, a number of public workshops will be held between 9th February and 18th February when submissions on the Alcohol Reform Bill close and in March, Raise The Bar will hold another public meeting in central Auckland addressing the issues surrounding Local Alcohol Plans.

Submissions on Alcohol Law Reform Bill due 18th February, 2011
The proposed Sale of Liquor Act (1989) amendments as outlined in the Alcohol Law Reform Bill are the first comprehensive review of the New Zealand liquor laws for over 20 years. The current legislative framework is complex and has limited ability to manage the accessibility and consumption of liquor in New Zealand. As a result, community concerns are increasing over the visible growth of alcohol-related harm and the associated social and economic costs.
If you are concerned about the harm that alcohol is causing in our communities, we encourage you to make a submission on this Bill to the Justice and Electoral Committee by 18 February 2011. Submissions can be made online:

Or by sending two copies to the following address:
